This three day intensive physical training and movement research combines methods from Butoh Dance, BodyWeather and Grotowski Physical Theatre, informed by South-East Asian trance mediumship. Each session balances rigorous physical activity, core and floor work, with subtle processes analysing micro-movements, sensitivity training, and shifts in perception. From Grotowski we’ll develop a psychophysical plasticity that uses limits and blockages for affective expression. From Butoh / BodyWeather we’ll explore somatic imagery, sublime / grotesque forms, and coexistence with the environment. The influence of South-East Asian trance mediumship supports these vocabularies with animal qualities and liminal states. There’ll be a mix of core vocabulary, improvisation and discussion, including site-specific research working with found objects and urban elements. There’ll be space to develop individual and group concerns, and the opportunity to build on this work during a DS4SI project in August - working with local communities along the Fairmount Corridor.
